Dakar, Senegal
Following the outstanding performance at the just concluded International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) – Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA) – 2023 the State of Sierra Leone has received the AFCAC President’s Award 2023.
Sierra Leone and South Africa emerged as the two best-performing African States in both Safety and Security, Critical Elements in terms of Effective Implementation.
Presenting the award, the AFCAC President, Silas Udahemuka, recognised the performances of both states in the implementation of their safety standards, stating that success is not singular in the African context.
“We are here celebrating the success story of two of our African States for breaking the ceiling and massive significant improvement in ICAO USOAP – CMA”, Silas said.
He maintained that AFCAC takes note of other States that were audited and recognised that they have also done very well but this has not been the practice of AFCAC, as it is happening for the first time. He further encouraged those coming after them to continue this practice.
Receiving the award on behalf of Sierra Leone, the SLCAA Director General, Dr. Moses Tiffa Baio, recognised the tremendous effort by other African countries and most especially Nigeria.
“The Sierra Leone aviation story is a message of hope and determination to other African countries. We came from 16% to above 70% in Aviation Safety. No message epitomises hope other than this”, Dr. Baio said.
Dr. Baio concluded by calling for more regional cooperation while stating that Sierra Leone’s success cannot be attributed to any other country outside the African continent.
